Something important to note is that Edison used to actually hire goons to harass film crews that were using competing cameras that he felt encroached on his patents. They would destroy the camera and may have also roughed people up in the process. This was one contributing factor to film production moving westward to Hollywood, actually - trying to avoid Edison's henchmen. Circumstantial, but it does lend more credence to the idea that Edison may have killed rivals. That being said, there were numerous other people experimenting with motion pictures at the time, so it seems odd Edison would focus on one specific relatively unknown inventor.

oh my god. i feel like an idiot. i never thought of the term "movies" as having the same origin as the term "talkies." they called them "talkies" because they were the update to silent films, i.e. including talking. in that same line, the predecessor of talkies would just be called movies........ because the images move. MOVIES. oh my god. glad i never had a film class or my film professor would be bashing their head into a wall right about now. i guess you only know what you know!

17:57 I spent several days on a train once, and in my experience, you DO start to notice and recognize the other people there after that much time. You see them in the dining car, the observation deck, etc. At one point, I fell down while getting off at a stop. People were saying "I saw you fall, are you ok?" For days after. You have to squeeze uncomfortably close to people when you pass in the extremely narrow hallways, too. I highly doubt that NOBODY would have remembered seeing him if he was there. Not even ONE person?

Edison invented pretty much just one thing: Modern R&D by just hiring a lot of smart people to work on the stuff he told them to work on. Before that, inventors usually came up with things and had to find sponsors. Everything else Edison did was stealing other people's ideas (Usually from people working for him, but... not always.), and marketing.

We did learn about him in my film class as his story is very interesting. But not only did Edison steal the idea of motion pictures from Louis Le Prince, but also his employee, Dickson who had also been inventing one, and he pretty much completely took that and called it his own.

11:09 This would be par for the course for Edison. Most of the inventions he had patents for he didn't himself invent, he either bought or stole them and claimed he invented it by himself. One he even took from the guy's destitute widow after he died, and he discredited Tesla's AC wiring by publicly electrocuting an elephant to death, after he had already stolen credit for some of Tesla's inventions. The guy was a raging douchebag is what I'm saying. I wouldn't put it past him to have a few people whacked.

Like, even if he did need money, if you’ve seen this world changing invention your brother is about to unveil to the world, the other eighty thousand from the mother’s will your brother gets suddenly seems small compared to the millions he’s about to make, like, if you’re as close a family as they were said to be, this invention is a all expense paid lifetime family pass to easy street.
